The ghouls returned several hours later (0200).

  • They said that the Germans had ended the search, but that there are handful still in the village.
  • They said that after the team dealt with Father Andrej, they would help them.
  • Chance asked what “dealt with” meant.  The ghoul said that it was up to the team to do what was necessary.

The Czechs took the team back to the church and used the radio back to set up a meeting with the resistance leadership at a warehouse in Karlstein at 0500.  That meant that they had about three hours to cross the river back into the town.

The team debated how and where to cross.  Tomas, one of the resistance men, ultimately arranged for the team to meet a barge up river that would take them to the docks in Karlstein disguised as the crew.

From the windows of the church upstairs, the team could see a German patrol and a truck at the south end of town, and another patrol with a halftrack by the tavern at the north end of town.

They used the tunnel to get back to the shed behind the town hall and attempted to sneak out of town behind the buildings, but they were spotted and the halftrack patrol moved up to intercept them.

Gus and Evelyn ran for the wheat fields north of town.  Tomas and Chance were exposed, with only a corral fence for cover.  Killer was hidden in a tree.

The soldiers dismounted and the machine gunner had Tomas in his sights.  A firefight broke out.  Tomas emptied his revolver into the machine gunner.  Killer took out three of the soldiers, while Chance killed the other one.

They ran for the wheat field as they heard the truck start up and managed to take cover away from the road before it arrived at their position.

They made it to the river, and the barge was waiting, loaded with crates and barrels.  They made it to the Karlstein docks without incident, but a pair of German sentries approached the boat just as the team was disembarking.  The captain quickly intervened and bribed the soldiers with cigarettes to move along.

Tomas then led the team to the meeting location, a warehouse off the street about half an hour early for the meeting.
