The Team
Klyde Burns, Lee “Shy” Michaels, Rochelle “Rocky” Kinsky, Dr. Kerry Nezzinger, and Alhague Farborgn five new agents of Apocalypse Prevention, Inc., the shadow corporation with the primary objective of keeping the Earth safe from supernatural threats, were assigned three routine random demon compliance inspections to verify whether the subjects were following the regulations that are applicable in their particular cases.
The agents operated out of the working out of the Samson, California office, where they researched information in government systems and reviewed public records before conducting their site visits to interview the subjects.
Background Research
- Agatha Harper Rove, witch in witness protection
Agatha lived so long in Lawrence, Massachusetts that no one remembers a time without her. Her tiny, unassuming cottage was always perfectly maintained with a manicured lawn. But trouble started when a group of new residents courted dark powers. Agatha was trying to protect the town as she always had, but the mystical battle leveled a great swathe of Lawrence. In exchange for her inadvertant service, API gave Rove a new identity and relocated her to California, where she is authorized to offer herbal remedies, but no spellcasting. - Dwayne Fogo, burner pyrophobe
Dwayne Fogo was an arsonist, sometimes for hire, always for pleasure. When someone else took credit for one of his blazes, he decided to make his mark in dramatic fashion. He should not have chosen a storehouse for nuclear waste. Faulty wiring in the structure prematurely set off one of his charges, and he was caught in the unnatural conflagration. Now he periodically transforms to living flame, and he must feed on anything combustible in the area to survive. Fogo is intensely afraid of fire and now works as lifeguard at posh swim club - Wilber Quench, grants wishes, allowed to tell fortunes
Quench frequented dens of iniquity throughout the world. He sought always to feed his hunger with the souls of avaricious humans. He always appeared as a dapper man, whose presence was disturbing on a fundamental level. Few could resist his offers of instant gratification. The hidden desires of feeble humans are apparent to him. He could deliver their fondest wish, but they had to first agree to his price. Foolishly, they rarely refused, and so their souls were forfeit. API intervened, and now Quench is closely monitored, and only allowed to tell fortunes.
Site Inspections
Agatha Harper Rove
Rove was allowed to operate a holistic pharmacy in an outdoor mall outside Samson, California. Shy, Kerry and Farborgn surveilled the site while Rocky and Klyde entered the shop to observe. Rove identified them as agents quickly. Her subsequent interview was routine, with nothing out of the ordinary other than the hologram on API registration card was fading. Rocky issued her a written warning.
Dwayne Fogo
Fogo was working as a lifeguard at an exclusive swim club outside Samson. When they arrived, two people were swimming in the pool among several large koi. Rocky and Kerry were intrigued by the Koi, who should not be able to survive in chlorinated water.
Kerry investigated the fish and fell into the pool. Rocky managed to grasp one of the fish and determined that it was mechanical, but Fogo had identified them as API agents. He was responsive to Klyde, but had to wait until end of his shift to get paperwork from his locker. While they waited, the rest of the team observed the area.
Using the API smartphone app, Shy identified a registered vampire among the patrons. Shy montiored the woman, and changed to a female form and followed the vampire into the ladies room when she failed to come out.
Kerry noticed a man running across the pool area and into the men’s locker room. He followed, also seeking to dry himself off. He found the man in the shower.
The vampire finished her business and left, but Shy overheard a woman in a bikini chanting in an unknown language that made Shy feel physically uncomfortable. Shy tried to distract the woman, but was not successful.
Then a bolt of lightning burst from the chanter’s fingers into the shower head. The power went out everywhere in the club. Two people in the pool and one in the shower were electrocuted.
Fogo and another by-stander, who was a doctor, rescued the disabled swimmers and tended to them. Kerry determined that the man in the shower was dead.
Shy stabbed the mage with a switchblade. The mage ran out the rear door, where she was intercepted by Rocky and then subdued by Shy.
