At the Safe House
Norris arrived at the apartment just before curfew. He was greeted at the doorway by Julienne Bonnet, the concierge of their apartment building, who Laurent thought might be a potential Gestapo informant. She seemed to know when everyone was coming and going from the building, especially at night, was very observant, and asked a lot of casual questions.
“All alone tonight Mr. Fournier?” she asked outside the front door.
“Not taking visitors tonight. Turning in early. Long day ahead tomorrow,” Norris replied.
“Haven’t seen you around recently,” she responded. “Been on travel?”
“Of course. But I’ve had quite a long journey, so I’m looking forward to a bite to eat and some sleep.”
“You lot don’t eat much, do you? Three gentlemen and never anything in the icebox.”
Norris realized that she had snooping around in the apartment and revealed it by accident. Norris pressed her on why she was entering the apartment.
“Why it is my obligation to help my guests to keep their flat presentable.”
“Madam Bonnet, uiu do not need to tidy up after us. We keep the apartment quite neat by ourselves.”
“My apologies, monsieur. How about if I cook you a nice meal since it is after curfew and you won’t be able go get something?”
“No, thank you, madam,” Norris replied politely . “I am quite tired and would like to clean up and get some sleep. And in the future, please do not to the flat without our permission.”
With that Madam Bonnet excused herself.
Norris then entered the apartment, turned on the radio and the shower, and then inspected their various hiding places. Nothing appeared to be out of order. He checked the apartment for surveillance devices, and was confident that no one other than the concierge had been in the apartment.
He then ensured that the blinds were closed and that most of the lights were off, before actually taking a shower.
At Maelys’ Apartment
Laurent, Antoinette and Maelys were at the apartment Maelys and Antoinette are sharing. Maelys had arrived shortly before Laurent. Her shift at the POW hospital had ended at 9PM.
Antoinette was in the attic, where she had received a signal from N. Returning to the apartment, she found Maelys and Laurent there. They set about deciphering the message.
Suddenly, Laurent heard banging and stomping in the building, coming from the floors below. Maelys told them to escape through the attic to the roof. She would stay to delay the Germans. It would be suspicious if she was not there. Laurent had the toolbox containing the explosives. Antoinette disassembled the suitcase radio and took it with her.
They climbed out on the roof, trying to be sneaky. Antoinette slipped on the smooth tiles, but no one seemed to notice. They headed for the building next door. Antoinette vaulted across the alley to the next roof. Laurent was not as spry and hit the roof with his leg. There was no signs of activity from below.
They made their way to an open window on the third the neighboring building. The room beyond was unoccupied. There was assorted junk scattered about and it was very dusty. They quietly closed the windows and then Antoinette examined Laurent’s leg. It was swollen but otherwise seemed intact. She wrapped expertly.
They decided to wait until morning before moving on. Antoinette decoded the message. N ordered them to find out what was going on at the Ollivier factory. He said that chemical weapon components were being manufactured there, the team needed to stop it, or at least capture evidence of it to pass on.
At the Safe House
After his shower, Norris examined the gold box again. He tried singing the inscription on the top of the box, but there was no effect.
He examined the photographs of the paintings. Looking closely at the Goddesss, he noticed that the star in the bridge of the nose was twinkling. He stared closer, and a vision appeared in his mind.
The small child walks towards you, fear in her eyes. her fate is sealed, though, and you will have no mercy. the two men either side of you nod sagely as she approaches. they have accepted, as you have done, the prize and now you rule over the shattered land. a small part of yourself screams at what you are about to do, but you are long lost. You eagerly await the return of your lord as the sacrifice is made; soon you shall have all your dreams come true.
After the vision faded, he collapsed. When he regained consciousness, it was morning. Norris quickly wrote down what he could remember of the vision.
