Mission Summary and Team
Monday, 28 April 1941
At the Farm
- Overnight, Simon was able to dig a five foot cube beneath the floor of the basement. He heard the sound of something coming outside and noticed that the sun had risen.
- He sees a horse-drawn cart bearing a woman and two men. Simon goes to the front door. At the sight of him, the woman jumps from the cart and runs to embrace him. Marie Claire introduces herself as Simon’s sweetheart. Her companions are the first resistance people to come for training (Millard Duhamel and Talon Sciverit), and they will stay at the farm as farmhands in case the Germans come around.
- She starts making small talk and interrupts Simon to ask why he has accepted her so easily. He replied that he knew things about her. She chided him for being so accepting.
- She offered him a note from Yves verifying what she told him and informing him that Marie Claire has a dead drop if they need to communicate. The note also said that Simon should be careful not to reveal the different cells to each other. Marie and her two colleagues were a cell and they would depart before the next cell came for training.
- Millard and Talon joined them in the house. Simon explained the plan, and they set to continue the digging of the tunnel.
In Town
- Victor went to the town hall to review the orders of occupation. The terms were severe.
- He then into the Town Hall to get his ration book. While being questioned by the soldier, the Leutnant came out and invited him into his office as he was the first registrant. They make small talk and Victor tells him that he received a job offer from his cousin by post and made his way from Dijon several weeks ago, arriving yesterday. The Leutnant wishes him well and approves papers.
- Antoinette went to Café Torneau to observe the locals. She ordered a coffee and was told to take it black because it was actually red wine.
- She was approached by a young man, Marlon Jarbert. He asked her where she came from? She told him that she Dijon to work at the new hospital? He asked if she was a nurse. She told him that she is doctor. He suggested that she assist Doctor LeBlanc, the aged town doctor who was all that the village had left since the young men went off to war.
- While they finished their drinks, and the barmaid refilled their cups, Antoinette noted that the locals appeared be resigned to their fate, though she did not think they had realized the full implications of the new situation.
She also noted that Marlon was quite focused on her, but not for social purposes. - When they finished their drinks, Marlon escorted Antoinette to the aging Farrier, Théodore LeBlanc, the farrier. His sons were interned as POWs. Needs help with the medical as well as blacksmithing duties. Antoinette mentioned that she knew someone who could help with the blacksmithing as well. She asked where she could set up. He suggested that she set up her infirmary elsewhere and he would send any patients to her.
- Antoinette suggested that Marlon could help her find a place to practice in. He also suggested that she practice in secret so the Germans do not commandeer her services. On the other hand, he said, if with their help should would have better access to supplies.
At the Farm
- They dug for several hours, while Simon instructed them in elementary Tradecraft and how to handle stressful situations. Millard was having trouble following, but Talon was picking it up.
- Around midday, Marie Claire called them for a lunch of weak soup.
