At the Clinic

  • After a short rest, Antoinette checked on Talon.
    • Marlon said that he been groaning in his sleep, but had not awakened.
    • She assessed his condition and determined that he was stable, but his leg was not reparable.
    • Antoinette told Marlon to get some rest. He was reluctant, but laid down on the empty bed and was asleep in a few minutes.
    • The German patient was awake and playing cards with another soldier. He was responding favourably to treatment.
    • Antoinette wanted to get someone to the farm to signal N about the box and Marlon and his visions because she had a feeling they would be leaving the village soon.
  • Around midnight, the Leutnant and two soldiers returned looking for Simon and Marie Claire. They were taken to the kitchen table where the Leutnant had them go over their story again.

    • The Leutnant asked what the fourth person was doing. Simon replied that Millard helped them load Talon onto the wagon and then they left.
    • The Leutnant asked what condition the farm was in. Simon replied that the farm had been abandoned, and that there were no animals and no seed, so they were still getting it straightened out.
    • The Leutnant told Simon that Millard was dead and that his chest had been crushed in and the damage was similar to the trauma Talon had received. He also mentioned that the basement door had been burst in and the basement destroyed. Simon responded that he knew nothing of this.
    • The Leutnant said that if he could not come up with reasonable answers the Gestapo would get involved and nobody wanted that.
  • Antoinette, who had been shut inside a room with the others while the interrogation was going on made a distraction of dropping a pile of supplies to give Simon some time to get his story straight.

    • At the Garage

  • Victor was stuck at the garage overnight. He was disassembling the kubelwagen past curfew.
  • The soldiers that were posted earlier were replaced by two veterans.
  • They searched the garage, did not find Victor’s engine disabling mixture.
  • The soldiers talked trash about the Polish citizens and the partisans.
    • They mentioned a partisan unit completely destroyed by a battalion of German infantry in a skirmish near the village of Huciska.
    • A few days later there was an ambush near the village of Szałasy where heavy casualties were inflicted upon another German unit.
    • At Śladów, 252 prisoners of war were shot or drowned.
    • At Ciepielów, some 300 POWs were shot. Victor had family there.
    • At Zambrów, a further 300 were killed.
    • Polish POWs of Jewish origin were found and shot on the spot.
    • Rapes were carried out before shooting the female captives.
    • All officers from lieutenant up were executed.
  • Victor recognized this as valuable intelligence. He told the guards that he needed to eat and get some sleep and went to the hammock in the office. There he wrote cryptic notes of what they had talked about in front of him. Then he went to sleep.

    • At the Clinic

  • The interrogation continued.
    • The Leutnant told him that they had searched the farm.
    • They searched the basement, but did not find the tunnel.
    • They did not find the shell casings. They did not find the rifle.
    • They searched the barn, but did not notice the displaced dirt
    • They did not dig through the garden
    • They found no evidence/trail of the golem
    • Simon finally told him that as they were arriving back from collecting the axe in Betton, he saw Millard flying through the air from the basement door.
      • Then the giant doll thing came out of the basement moving toward Millard.
      • Simon told Marie Claire to turn the wagon around and went to help Millard, but he was already dead.
      • Talon came out of the basement right behind and shot the thing. The Leutnant had Simon confirm that those were the shots. Simon told him that the thing did not react to being shot twice. The thing hit Talon once and shattered his leg. The break was audible from 5 meters.
      • Simon threw a log at the thing to distract it. He hit it in the chest. It did not seem to be affected, but ran off around the back of the house. Simon pursued, but when he rounded the corner, the attacker was gone.
    • The Leutnant instructed Simon and Marie Claire to go into the room with the others. While alone
      • Simon gestured that Talon should not survive and then sat quietly with Marie Claire.
      • Antoinette tended to Talon.
      • Marlon slept peaceably.
    • The soldiers summon everyone into the kitchen and the Leutnant summed up the story.
      • He said that Simon and Marie Claire were from Betton on the wagon having collected the axe.
      • They saw an assailant with a sledge hammer robbing the farmhouse. He hit Millard in the chest several times before Talon shot at him with a rifle. But he missed.
      • The assailant then attacked Talon, hitting him in the leg, but ran off when Simon through a log at him.
    • The Leutnant said that once Simon showed him to the rifle and shell casings, Talon would be attributed with possession of the rifle and face the consequences.
      • He asked how long Simon had known Talon. Simon said they had first met two days previously when he came looking for work. Simon said that they would need help in the orchard and getting the farm fixed up.
      • He asked Antoinette when Talon could be interviewed. She said that he was not responding well to treatment. She also indicated that the Leutnant’s story was not backed up by the medical evidence. The Leutnant said that if she wanted to the Gestapo to investigate, she was welcome to refute the story.
    • They agreed the support the story and all went to bed.
