Chosen drakin sorcerer Raziel, dwarven Weaponsmaster Tarek Ambervaile, Glowborn Salvager Eliah, and elven priest Nerian had come to the Scavenger’s Rest bar on Gateway to learn about a job. Following the brawl, they took seats at the bar.
A short time later, a well dressed human and an orc entered. They looked around, spotted the four at the bar and approached. The human was Tomas Hawke, a well-known merchant.
Hawke offered the group 1,000 cogs them to investigate the wreck of a frigate called the Raven in the hopes of recovering the body of Hawkes’ son, Allon. The Raven had disappeared ship seven years before with Allon aboard. Allon wore distinctive black gloves embroidered with hawks, which would make their task easier. In addition, Hawkes offered to purchase whatever salvage the team did not wish to keep for themselves at fair prices.
Hawke introduced the orc as Karr Luckfinder, captain of the cloudskiff Chance, who was superstitious and so named for all the charms he carried. Luckfinder discovered the Raven and had the foresight to gather some earth from the island upon which it rested, without which it would be impossible to find again. Hawke hired Luckfinder to ferry the group to and from the wreck, for which he was promised two shares of any salvage found.
The team signed the contract, which stated the terms with no subterfuge. However, when asked when they could depart, Luckbringer admitted to a matter of honor that had to be settled before he could leave Gateway; he had to fight a duel in the arena. The team went to arena the arena with Luckbringer, where they learned that it was a crew vs. crew duel in single combat.
The judges called for the first combatants, and Tarek entered the ring against, Zed Cobb, the unlucky mercenary. At first they seemed evenly matched, until Ralonan Mistborn tried to cast a spell from the sidelines, which was apparently not against the rules.
Nerian took offense at the attempted sorcery, and engaged in a wizardly duel on the sidelines against Mistborn and defeated him.
Eventually, Tarek knocked out Cobb to win the first challenge. As the others were occupied and the captains were to go last, Raziel stepped forward and was challenged by Adriana Fell, who was best known as an archer.
The bard Cade Thindar, also of the opposing crew, stepped forward to challenge Nerian and avenge Mistborn. Nerian and Cade traded ineffectual blows while Eliah slung stones at the bard. The elf and the Glowborn knocked out Cade in short order.
With all of the challenger’s crew defeated except the captain, the judges called the duel called in favor of Luckbringer.
